The Ackhorne

What's it good for?

Great beers, arguing about the pronunciation of Ackhorne.

Where is it?

I'm not a huge fan of many parts of York on a Saturday night and Micklegate is right up there in my list of places to steer clear with its stag party magnet Popworld at its epicentre, but a stone's throw away, just out of sight (and thankfully earshot) is The Ackhorne. An oasis of tranquility among the horror on show down the Micklegate Run, hidden down the lane beside St Martin's Church, The Ackhorne gives the perfect place to hide out.

Although relatively serene compared to the surrounding area The Ackhorne has caused a few heated debates at its tables, for years the argument has raged between my friends over the pronunciation of Ackhorne, I say 'Ay-Korn' some say 'Ak-Horn', all I know is that the spelling is relatively new, it was The Acorn until the early 90s when there was a large refurbishment and it also has a bunch of acorns adorning the sign. That's enough for me. Acorn.

What's it all about?

The Ackhorne is an extremely well known pub both locally and for visitors, in fact for anyone who takes a passing interest in seeking out a nice place for a decent beer. It has seen its fair share of ups and downs under ownership of PubCo Enterprise Inns, but has steered through calmer waters over the past few years.

The Ackhorne has a large bar room with long benches under the stained glass windows with plenty of flexible seating providing a space just as good for meeting a large group as it is for finding a space as a couple. In the cozier function room there are traditional pub games and a fire through winter while the large modern terrace out the back provides a fantastic sun-trap through the summer.

What's on the bar?

There was a selection of 5 quality beers and a cider across 6 pumps, with a polypin of cider on the side of the bar. Freedom Organic 'hand crafted English lager' on draught along with the usual crop of Guinness, John Smiths etc. and more fruity ciders in the fridge from Old Mout.

Do they serve food?

Lunchtime only menu of home cooked pub meals and a Sunday Roast.

Wednesday - Friday: 12pm - 3pm Saturdays: 12pm - 5pm Sundays: 12pm - 4pm

Is it accessible / allow kids / dogs?

The bar is accessible from the front door but there are steps to everywhere else. Dogs are very welcome.

Will you go again?

Certainly. The Ackhorne is usually on the CAMRA Ale Trail and it's good for a reasonably quiet drink when town is busy or meeting groups of friends before heading joining the throng.

Opening Hours

Sunday - Thursday: 12pm - 11pm Friday - Saturday: 12pm – 12am
