Red Lion
What's it good for?
Real ale in the town centre by a roaring fire through winter, or a large beer garden during summer.
Where is it?
All eyes are on Fossgate and Walmgate at the moment with so many new venues open from Sutlers and The Hop at the top end down to Fossgate Social and Walmgate Ale House further down, these streets have seen an explosion of newcomers.
Nestled amongst these youngsters are some York stalwarts like the Blue Bell, and The Red Lion - sat unchanged in decades bar the selection of ales and the occasional refresh of the upholstery - they are the pubs that provide the solid foundations for the rest of the establishments to grow around.
What's it all about?
The Red Lion is a lovely pub with roaring fires in three cozy rooms, a huge beer garden with lots of seating, and a decent menu full of pub grub.
I can't help noticing it is starting to feel rough around the edges though and a small refurbishment sympathetic to the history of the building wouldn't go unnoticed and would keep The Red Lion apace with the competition around it.
What's on the bar?
There were 6 hand pulls with a permanent Rudgate, I've always had a great pint here and they have been flying the flag for local ales for a long time. The lager and cider on tap were the standard pub set with nothing out of the ordinary.
Do they serve food?
We popped into The Red Lion an a Sunday and there was a Pie & Pint deal on for £9.95; if we hadn't been on our way to Walmgate Ale House for a meal I would have gone for the wonderful sounding Pheasant, Port, and Mushroom Pie.
There is also a great selection on the Main Menu, with a three course meal for £11.95 and a few specials such as a Steak Pie from Kanvesmire Butchers and of course the now ubiquitous pork pies on the bar.
Is it accessible / allow kids / dogs?
There is a small step at the front door, but accessible from the rear with ramps inside. I didn't see kids or dogs.
Will you go again?
Yes, The Red Lion is a cozy, traditional pub right in the heart of town.
