Postern Gate

What's it good for?

Fantastic if you want a pint with your breakfast.

Where is it?

Located in an awkward spot on a busy junction the Postern Gate is at the end one of York's most run-down city-centre streets, Piccadilly.

Walking from town you pass the shabby Banana Warehouse, the derelict Reynard's Garage, the decrepit Ryedale Building, then a string of car parks before arriving at the imposing Travelodge; built to mimic the style of the old Postern Gate that stood here as a defensive structure in the city walls with the ground floor pub named after the old structure.

What's it all about?

The Postern Gate is decent enough for a Wetherspoon's, but those drinks are cheap for a reason.

As a large open plan pub The Postern Gate is fine during the day, serving standard Wetherspoon's fare and a wide range of craft beers and real ale. By night it descends into a raucous and occasionally threatening spot especially on a Saturday night with the revelers taking little respect for their environment. I'd be pissed off if I was staying in the hotel upstairs.

Unfortunately this all means that the venue that stands out on the street for seeming modern and new from a distance is scruffy around the edges, with broken fixtures and fittings and dirty bathrooms once you get inside the building.

It's a shame, this could be a nice place, but that's not the market they are aiming for.

What's on the bar?

Where else can you get a can of Vedett for £1.49 or a bottle of Brewdog Punk IPA for £1.99 that isn't a supermarket?

As usual for a Wetherspoon's the range is large and the prices are low. The quality of the cask beers was to be honest very low, on each of my last three visits it's been lifeless. Stick to the bottles.

Do they serve food?

Food aplenty, standard pub grub. Again the standard is cheap and cheerful but satisfying and readily available.

Is it accessible / allow kids / dogs?

As a new build the Postern Gate is accessible throughout. It's a family friendly pub but doesn't allow dogs.

Will you go again?

Unlikely.
