Falcon Tap

What's it good for?

Large beer garden, and for including as part of a real ale trail down Micklegate.

Where is it?

If you've ever had the misfortune to "do the Micklegate run" then you may remember a particularly dark bar with trebles-for-singles deals and eardrum busting music that was called Rumours, it was shit. That place has undergone a major refit and is now The Falcon Tap.

What's it all about?

In early 2014 the signage outside Rumours was changed to The Falcon Tap, piggybacking on the current trend of "Tap" pubs by tacking it onto the name of pub that used this building for 300 years, The Falcon. It was given a lick of paint and a relaunch but behind the facade of the single coat of emulsion it was still the same dank cesspit at heart.

A major overhaul in December 2014 finished what should have been done long before, adding pub-style panelling and moving the cellar to beneath the bar, allowing the Falcon Tap to become a proper pub once again.  If you went to The Falcon Tap in 2014 and wrote it off you should give it another go now it's finished.

The back room is set up to accommodate a weekend crowd with long tables and metal chairs with plenty of room for standing, and the front room is a lovely snug with stools facing out onto the street, a very welcoming view as you walk past. There is a huge beer garden opening onto Toft Green that is sure to be popular through summer.

The Falcon Tap is unrecognisable from it's predecessor and worth a visit just to see how a decent pub can be created from nothing.

What's on the bar?

There are 6 pumps with varying number of guest beers, there were 4 available when I went in. A selection of bottled ales from Saltaire Brewery among others are in the fridge. The rest of the cask range on tap were made up from Greene King, including their Noble Lager.

Do they serve food?

Drinks only at the Falcon Tap.

Is it accessible / allow kids / dogs?

There is access to the Falcon Tap from Toft Green through the beer garden, well behaved dogs are welcome, and children are allowed in before 7pm.

Will you go again?

I wouldn't say it's going to be a destination pub for me, but I'll be happily popping in for a pint in the front room when I'm passing that way.
